CAN I ARRIVE LATE OR LEAVE EARLY?

We do not permit late arrivals out of respect to our students and teachers; however, if you are running only a couple minutes late, please notify the instructor and if you are already signed in to class, we will do our best to accommodate you. On the flip side, leaving early, especially during Savasana, our final meditation, disturbs your fellow yogis. Kindly wait until the end of class to leave. If you have a special situation, please talk to your instructor BEFORE class. We do not issue refunds for late arrivals.

WHAT IS YOGA?!?

The word yoga, from the Sanskrit word yuj, means to yoke or bind, and is often interpreted as “union” or a method of discipline.

An Indian sage, Patanjali, is believed to have collated the practice of yoga into the Yoga Sutras an estimated 2,000+ years ago. The Yoga Sutras are a collection of 195 statements that serve as a philosophical guidebook for most of the yoga that is practiced today. It outlines eight limbs of yoga: the yamas (restraints), niyamas (observances), asana (postures), pranayama (breathing), pratyahara (withdrawal of senses), dharana (concentration), dhyani (meditation), and samadhi (absorption/enlightenment). The belief is that as we explore these eight limbs, we begin first refining our behavior in the outer world and are able to turn our focus inwardly until we reach samadhi (liberation, enlightenment).

Today, most people practicing yoga in the US are engaged in the third limb, asana, which is a program of physical postures designed to purify the body and provide the physical strength and stamina required for long periods of meditation.

WHAT DOES OM MEAN?

Om (or Aum) is a symbol representing a sacred sound, syllable, mantra, and an invocation. It is variously said to be the essence of the supreme Absolute consciousness.  In Indic traditions, Om serves as a sonic representation of the divine, a standard of Vedic authority and a central aspect of soteriological doctrines and practices. The syllable is often found at the beginning and the end of chapters in the Vedas, and the Upanishads.

14

WHAT DOES NAMASTE MEAN?

Namaste is a Sanskrit word that expresses respect, honor, and gratitude.  More often than not, it is used as a greeting or salutation. It is often spoken with a slight bow, hands pressed together, palms touching, and fingers pointing upwards, with thumbs close to the chest (this gesture is called añjali mudrā).

15

WHAT IS BARRE?!?

Barre is a full-body workout technique that combines elements of Yoga, Strength Training, Dance/Ballet and Pilates.  Barre classes typically use a wall-mounted barre for support and balance. Some classes use additional props like hand weights, a small ball, or resistance bands, in general barre classes rely less on resistance equipment and instead use a students own body weight.

16

IS YOGA A RELIGION?

NO! OIt is an ancient philosophy that began in India an estimated 5,000 years ago. The father of classical ashtanga yoga (the eight-limbed path, not to be confused with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois’ Ashtanga yoga) is said to be Patanjali.  These texts provide a framework for spiritual growth and mastery over the physical and mental body.
